Users Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People purchasing such medications should be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team note that people who lose weight through dieting generally have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

People who have come off the jabs report a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something flipping and I was suddenly starving," described one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Use

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle support.
